Different Is Not Stupid or Ugly A South African Story by Grace Zuzo is an excellent story that not only enlightens the reader to different South African cultures and women's traditions, but it also teaches the valuable lesson that just because something is different does not mean it is bad. The book is very interesting as you learn what each tribe does to prepare their young women for adulthood and the illustrations are very well drawn. I highly recommend this book as it is both educational and interesting.
Learning of cultural differences is no stranger to me. I think the author does an awesome job describing the differences from one culture to another. It's not only the location that makes the synopsis of "different," it's the way someone dresses, talks, looks, and most importantly the cultural traditions that one believes in and lives by on a day to day basis that stimulates this idea. I think the author did a good job pointing out differences and similarities, but at the end differences enhance each and everyone of us, which is what was concluded. Zuzo did a good job introducing differences through culture in a non-offensive way. Not to mention the vivid illustrations, which helps to understand even more.
If you have ever struggled to get your child to treat people with differences in a kind way, or to not judge a book by its cover, then this is the book for you. Besides teaching your child about South African culture, your child will go on a journey with a young girl who starts out believing that because the South Africans dressed, talked and carried themselves differently, that they were not intelligent. She then goes on a journey to be surprised that they actually were very bright and could teach her great things. She learns that not everyone looks, acts, or speaks the same way, but these differences are something to cherish and learn from, not to make fun of or judge.
